Article 4 – Crucified, Died, and Buried (8/13)

He Suffered Under Pontius Pilate; Was Crucified, Died, and Was Buried

“The cross symbolizes the great intersection of God’s holiness and grace. God’s holiness demanded that sins be paid for; God’s grace provided the payment.”1

Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, notice what Paul says was of “first importance.”

Why did Jesus have to die?

  1. Substitutionary Atonement. Jesus died the death we deserved. Read Romans 6:23; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 10:10-14
  2. To destroy him who holds the power of death.
    Read 1 Peter 5:8; Hebrews 2:14

“Pilate is a defined, known figure in human history who made specific choices that unwittingly lent his support to Satanic principalities and powers arrayed in opposition to God and his people.”2
  3. To identify with humanity. Read Hebrews 2:9-10
See C.S. Lewis quote on page 24
    Read Hebrews 2:17-18; Hebrews 4:14-15

How does it help to know Jesus experienced temptation and suffering just like we do?
