“I believe in the holy catholic Church, the communion of the saints.”
“The church is what God is building in the world…God’s divine work built on the foundation of Christ.”1 (See Matthew 16:15-18)
Holy means to be set apart. Read 1 Peter 2:9 and reflect on the ways the apostle describes the nature of the Church.
Catholic means universal. We have a shared fellowship.
Because we have a shared fellowship:
We share a common confession. (1 John 2:22-23)
We are the “Body of Christ,” joined in mystical communion with Christ and one another. (1 Corinthians 12:27-31; Galatians 3:26-29)
We are a community, not an institution. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
