Self Made?

I recently noticed someone wearing a t-shirt inscribed with the simple phrase, “Self Made.” Assuming this was some way of the person expressing themselves, it struck me as a curious position to take. I have no argument with the value of striving for success through hard work. Such an attitude is definitely beneficial. Yet for someone to see herself or himself as “self made” seems to miss an unescapable truth.

For you formed my inward parts;
    you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

These are the words of Psalm 139:13-14 in the Bible. They remind us of a Creator who has formed us and given us life. It is true of you, as with every other person without exception. Before anything you accomplish for yourself, you are “God made.” You are a beautifully designed work, a masterpiece in God’s eyes. I hope this will be an encouragement to you.

My prayer for you today:
Lord, Creator of all, please encourage my friend today. Remind him/her of how wonderfully you have made us, and that you cherish the work of your hands. Amen.

Please leave a comment to let me know how I can pray for you.
