The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
And His ears are open to their cry.
– Psalm 34:15
The human eye is remarkable, truly a work of magnificent design by our Creator. It can distinguish over 1 million different colors (some studies say far more), can detect light as dim as a single photon, change its focus up to 50 times per second, and may demand as much as half of the brain’s resources to process the information it gathers.1
If the human eye is so remarkable, what does that suggest about the eye of God? God’s eye must be keen beyond our imagination, able to see all things with clarity. If God’s eye is upon us, it means we are fully seen. We are seen not only at all times (constantly), but also in every way (completely). Nothing lies unobserved by our Father. Psalm 139 reflects the same thought.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;
Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.
– Psalm 139:15-16
Indeed, such knowledge is too wonderful for us to understand. It is very reassuring to know that we are seen by God. This is especially true when it feels like our whole world has fallen apart. Hagar took comfort in this reality after being treated harshly by Sarai, saying “You are a God who sees me” (Genesis 16:13). Upon being introduced to Jesus, Nathanael must have come to the same powerful awareness of being seen by God when Jesus said to him, “When you were under the fig tree, I saw you” (John 1:48).
In the midst of fearful and uncertain times, our hearts may struggle with doubt. When those times come upon us, we would do well to recall the truth revealed in Psalm 34:15: God’s eye is on the righteous, and His ear open to our cry.
Why should I feel discouraged,
Why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely,
And long for heav’n and home;
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant Friend is he;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.
