In Their Steps

  • Wrong Side of the River

You’ve heard the phrase, “wrong side of the tracks.” Jews in Jesus’ day had their own version. It was the “wrong side of the river.”

  • Mother Knows Best

On that day in Cana, Mom felt like it was time to get started, and Jesus apparently was convinced she was right.

  • Left Unattended

I wonder if the disciples of Jesus sometimes felt a little like parents of a toddler. They think Jesus will be okay for just a short time, but then discover he has once again wandered off into unapproved territory.

  • You Felt That?

Surely the woman was emotionally exhausted by the social burden that plagued her life. We can’t be sure, but she may have been coming to the end of her hope. But as we know, hope always abides when Jesus is around.

  • The Breeding of Familiarity

The pages of the Bible reveal many things with great consistency, one of which being the fact that a prophet of God has a tough calling. It is a tough calling regardless of the audience; it is especially tough with a hometown audience.

  • Surely I Am With You

It is one thing to be with Jesus while he is doing the signs and wonders; it is quite another to go out on your own and be called to do the same things. Nevertheless, that is exactly what Jesus called them to do.

  • Slow to Learn

To not ask for help is to let our pride keep us in ignorance. Humility allows Jesus to impart the insight we need to be better representatives of the Kingdom.

  • The Voice of Prophecy

The essence of a prophet’s task is to be the agent of God speaking to the people of God. John was definitely a prophet. And as he would come to learn, some people find the voice of prophecy offensive.

  • Kingdom Kinship

Koinonia, we might say, is to have “commonness,” and what is family other than a group of people who hold something in common? A tight-knit family is one where the members emphasize the common bond.

  • Enough

Jesus gave the disciples a lesson on faith, and how the limiting factors facing us may not be the end of the story.

  • One Small Step

We can be confident that Jesus will prompt us to take steps of faith that call us out of the boat of safety and comfort so we can walk in places where the power of God can be displayed.

  • The Formula for Unpopularity

I’m guessing it was very satisfying to be among the inner circle of the guy who was becoming the hottest ticket in the country. Unfortunately for them, Jesus wasn’t interested in popularity.

  • Oh, Bother

One of the many lessons we learn about discipleship is that bother comes with the territory.

  • Dropping Stones

Imagine you are there. Jesus is writing, but no one says a word. Still, in the tension of the moment, there is a sound you begin to hear. It is the sound of stones hitting the ground.

  • Just Say It

No longer did Jesus want a report on general opinion. He asked the disciples to make a claim of their own.
