In Their Steps

  • 20/20 Hindsight

…in that crowd of people descending toward Jerusalem there was one person who knew exactly what was happening—and why.

  • Inflamed

Jesus walks in the odd mixture of boldness and humble submission. Suffering and death await him only days ahead. Therefore Jesus has no motive for tempering his zeal for the Heavenly Father.

  • The Noticer

Her offering was not the kind that would catch the attention of others, and she certainly wasn’t trying to be noticed. But Jesus was watching, and he saw.

  • Prodigiocity

What Mary had done was just downright wasteful. Not to lend offense to Jesus; no one would argue that he wasn’t worthy of kindness. But this? Surely even Jesus would admonish her for such impulsive actions.

  • Redefining Moments

We know the defining moment by which Judas became known to the world as the betrayer of Jesus. We know the choice he made. What we don’t know is why.

  • And the Table was Prepared

What the disciples did not recognize at the time is that something larger had also been prepared. It wasn’t a room, but rather a sovereign arrangement of people and events, the pieces of which all having now been perfectly aligned.

  • The Towel

Though he may be a bit more dramatic about it, Peter is expressing what all of you are thinking. What is Jesus doing washing feet?

  • Suspicion

The disciples had to deal with one of two realities. Either they had severely miscalculated the character of their friends, or something had gone seriously wrong.

  • Overconfidence

The curiosity among the disciples must have been growing quickly. What is Jesus talking about? Where is he going? And why can’t we come?

  • Trust Me

I know you are having trouble trusting the circumstances. So, Peter, will you at least trust me?

  • Finding the Way

Jesus is “the way,” not as a series of right and left turns, but as the only person through whom God has fully disclosed Himself.

  • Disclosure

They had been waiting for generations for the day when this news could joyfully be proclaimed. Why not let the people know?

  • No Longer Servants

Jesus says that he considers them friends. Not “good friends” or “best friends,” but just friends. I say “just” friends because he doesn’t try to qualify it the way we often do. He doesn’t need to.

  • Over My Head

The disciples had adapted to unpopularity, but murderous violence is a huge step further.

  • Joy Comes

When you are in the darkness, no amount of discussion about light will make it any brighter around you.
